CHAPTER 20

I had never felt so vulnerable, so exposed before in my life than when I told Gemma about what my real purpose is, saving children from a living hell. The only people that know are those who do the actual abduction of the children, and Jesús, Carlos, and Hilda. Now Major Stewart and his men know. And Gemma. Rico’s going to know as well.

In all honesty, it’s a relief.

“Gemma, get your things, we’re going home,” I state.

The situation has been accelerated. Whomever it was on the phone specified that Gemma is a target for information and he was going to obtain it, preferably in a way he chose. Which I am sure would be the most excruciating way possible.

She has been named next.

Over my dead fucking body!

“Mr. Black, I appreciate that, but I’m not about to let some sick man control my life. I’ve got work to do, I’m not going anywhere.”

Stubborn. She is stubborn, mule headed, and ridiculously impossible.

“You are leaving. With me. This isn’t a discussion.”

“No I am NOT. You’ve just confirmed that my parents were murdered. You’ve informed me that you break-up international child prostitution rings. My whole world has just been thrown upside down, and it wasn’t very stable to begin with. I need familiarity, I need to get my feet firmly planted again and get my head cleared. Work is the only way I can do that, it’s the one place that doesn’t change. You can send your Black Mobile for me later on, but I’m finishing out my day, just like a do every other day.” Her chin is lifted in defiance, her hands are on her hips, everything about her is screaming at me to force her.

A pang of guilt spears my heart. I feel responsible for the mess she’s in. I feel responsible for her. She’s mine now, regardless of how she got here. I have to do whatever it takes to protect her, and make her happy.

She needs familiarity? I’ll give her familiarity.

“Well, Ms. Trudeau, if you disobey me that would be an infraction, and you had an example of the repercussions of that a short while ago,” my tone is very low and laced with promise.

“Mr. Black, you seem to think that frightens me.” The defiant tone in her voice has dropped and I’m sure her body is reacting to the reminder of her spanking earlier, the one she admittedly enjoyed. “As I recall, someone once told me, ‘Never assume, it makes you weak.’ I never pegged you for weak.” The memory of her earlier arousal is clear in her tone, and her face.

She still has the audacity to be cocky.

“Pet, you enjoyed it,” I stroke her cheek with a knuckle, a smile lifting my lips.

“Sir,” she purrs, “I have no doubt we will both find out all that I do enjoy.” Stepping away to put some distance between our bodies, the act does little to extinguish the electricity between us. “But too much of my day has been used for selfishness.
